The Swedish Gate and Jacob's Barracks
Highlights
- The last surviving city gate
- A narrow archway with real echo
- A barracks turned shops and galleries
- Fortifications reduced to two survivors
- A short, atmospheric history walk
About this tour
This session passes through the last surviving gate of Riga's old fortifications and continues to the long facade of a former military barracks. You see the narrow archway that once controlled movement through the city walls, then a row of buildings that has shifted from military to civilian use. It is a short look at two survivors of the old town's fortified past.
I check sound at the gate, since the archway can carry echoes, then walk the length of the barracks facade, answering questions throughout. A short note on the barracks' current shops follows by message afterwards.
It suits anyone interested in military architecture or adaptive reuse. It also pairs well with a Three Brothers houses session.

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
