About this tour

This session walks through Monti and Esquilino, two neighbourhoods that sit just behind Rome's more famous centre. You see the narrow streets of the ancient Suburra, the ninth-century mosaics inside Santa Prassede, and the spice stalls of the Esquilino market before finishing at the strange alchemists' door in Piazza Vittorio. It moves through everyday Rome rather than its monuments.

After the sound check, the guide walks the route stop by stop, explaining the history behind each one and pausing for your questions, before closing with a coffee recommendation in a Monti bar. A short list of addresses follows by message.

This suits anyone who wants to see how Romans actually live day to day, beyond the ruins and churches.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Rome before heading out.

  2. The Suburra 21 min

Walking these narrow streets, the guide explains why ancient Rome considered the Suburra its roughest quarter, and points out how the medieval and modern buildings now sit on top of it.

  3. Santa Prassede 21 min

Inside the church, the camera looks up at the ninth-century mosaics in the Chapel of Saint Zeno, and the guide explains why they still shine as brightly as when they were laid.

  4. Esquilino market and Piazza Vittorio 21 min

Among the spice stalls of the Esquilino market, the guide walks to Piazza Vittorio and points out the so-called alchemists' door, covered in symbols said to hold the secret of turning metal into gold.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Rome: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Carciofi alla romana and Trastevere, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.

  • Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
