Trajan's Column, a spiral carved in stone
Highlights
- A story meant to be read from the bottom
- A relief spiralling out of easy sight
- Narrative structure explained, not just described
- One detail, looked at properly
- A column that tells a complete story
About this tour
This short session reads Trajan's Column from the base upward, following the spiral relief the way it was designed to be understood. You see the story's starting point and hear how the carving continues upward past where the eye can easily follow. It is a focused look at one detail rather than a wider tour.
I stay at the base and trace the story's opening scenes, explaining the narrative structure as we go. I take questions throughout and send a short note afterwards with the story's broader outline.
This suits anyone with a specific interest in Roman relief sculpture. It also pairs well with a session on Trajan's Markets right beside the column.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Rome before heading out.
-
The base of the column 15 min
You see the relief's carved story beginning at the base, and I explain where to look first before the spiral climbs out of easy sight.
-
Following the spiral upward 15 min
I trace the relief as far up the shaft as the camera can resolve it, pointing out where the story's key scenes fall along the way.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Rome: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Supplì and Trastevere, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
