Underneath the Cube Houses
Highlights
- Tilted cube houses from underneath
- 1980s design, still striking today
- Ordinary rooms in an unusual shell
- A structural logic explained plainly
- Two landmarks, one short walk apart
About this tour
This session looks closely at the tilted Cube Houses, first from underneath the cluster and then through the window of the one open to visitors. You see the structural logic behind the angle and how ordinary rooms fit inside such an unusual shell. It stays within a single small block.
We start underneath, where the angle is easiest to explain, then move to the window of the show cube for the interior view. I keep the pace slow, since the design rewards a longer look than a quick pass. Questions about the engineering come naturally, and I answer them as we go.
It suits anyone interested in architecture and unusual design. It also pairs naturally with the Markthal session, since both sit within a short walk of each other.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Rotterdam before heading out.
-
Cube Houses exterior 15 min
The camera holds on the tilted cube-shaped houses from below, and I explain the structural logic behind the 1980s design, since it looks stranger than it actually is.
-
Show cube interior view 15 min
Looking through the window of the show cube, you see how the interior fits inside the angled shell, which I describe room by room.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Rotterdam: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Dutch cheese (Gouda, Edam) and Witte de With, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
