Under the Markthal's painted ceiling
Highlights
- One of Europe's largest painted ceilings
- A horseshoe-shaped market hall
- Stalls run by the same vendors for years
- Modern architecture over an everyday market
- A calm early look before the crowds
About this tour
This session opens under the Markthal's enormous painted ceiling before moving down to the stalls themselves. You see the scale of the artwork from directly beneath it and hear how the horseshoe-shaped hall changed the way this part of Rotterdam shops for food. It stays inside the hall throughout.
We start looking straight up, since the ceiling needs a minute to take in properly, then move through the stalls at an easy pace. I point out one or two vendors I know personally rather than trying to cover them all. A short list of stalls worth knowing follows by message.
It suits anyone curious about modern architecture and everyday food culture together. It also works well early in a visit, before the hall gets busy.
Included
- Live video session with a local guide
- A close look at the dishes and where locals buy them
- A short list of places and dishes to try later

Markthal ceiling 21 min
The camera tilts up at the vast painted ceiling, and I explain the scale of the artwork, one of the largest of its kind in Europe, before the ground floor comes into view.

A produce stall 21 min
At one stall I have known for years, you see the produce laid out for the day, and I explain how a horseshoe-shaped market hall changed shopping habits in this part of the city.

Time to ask anything about Rotterdam: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Stroopwafel and Kop van Zuid, worth a slower look.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
