The border line on Untersberg's ridge
Highlights
- A border running straight along a mountain ridge
- Austria and Germany seen from one viewpoint
- Bavarian villages visible across the ridge
- A border most visitors never expect on a mountain
- Exposed terrain seen with genuine care
About this tour
This session follows part of Untersberg's summit ridge, where the mountain marks the border between Austria and Germany. You see the ridge path itself and then a viewpoint taking in both sides, Salzburg below on the Austrian side and Bavarian villages visible across the German border. It is a short session built around a border most visitors never realise runs straight along a mountain ridge.
I walk the ridge at a careful pace, since the terrain is more exposed than the lower slopes. Questions come in on the border's history throughout, and I answer them as we go. A short note on the wider hiking network follows once we finish.
This suits anyone with an interest in geography as much as scenery. It also pairs well with the lower slopes session for a fuller picture of the mountain.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
