About this tour

This session follows a Bosnian food route through a wood-fired bakery, a Ćevapi grill and a coffee stall in the coppersmiths' street of Baščaršija. You see burek pulled from the oven and small grilled sausages folded into somun bread. It closes with the copper pot and slow ritual of Bosnian coffee.

The guide opens with a sound check by the bakery, then moves stall to stall, explaining each dish as it is prepared. You can ask about ingredients, technique or the differences between Bosnian and Turkish coffee throughout. A short list of where each stop is found is sent on afterwards.

This suits anyone planning to eat their way through Sarajevo and wanting a sense of where to go first. It also suits coffee drinkers curious what actually separates a Bosnian coffee from a Turkish one.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Sarajevo before heading out.

  2. A wood-fired bakery 21 min

The camera looks into a wood-fired oven as a tray of burek comes out, the pastry coiled into a spiral before baking. The guide explains the different fillings and how bakers judge when the oven is ready.

  3. A Ćevapi grill 21 min

At a grill the camera follows small grilled sausages going into warm somun bread with a spoon of kajmak and raw onion on top. The guide explains what makes Sarajevo's version different from Ćevapi elsewhere in the region.

  4. Coffee on a low stool 21 min

In the coppersmiths' street the camera settles at a low stool where a copper pot of Bosnian coffee is set down with a lump of sugar. The guide explains how it differs from Turkish coffee, down to the grind and the pour.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Sarajevo: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Bosnian coffee and Baščaršija, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Sarajevo time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
