About this tour

This longer session climbs from the fortress above the old bazaar down through a museum and finally to a nearby mosque, tracing several centuries in one session. You see the hilltop walls, a museum built inside former Ottoman buildings, and a mosque's painted portico. It follows the old bazaar's highest and most historic points.

I explain the fortress's rebuilding history first, then slow down properly at the museum since the building itself has as much to explain as its exhibits. The mosque comes last, once there is enough context for its decoration.

This suits anyone who wants Skopje's older history explained thoroughly in one session. It also suits anyone curious about how many different periods actually shaped the same small hillside.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Skopje before heading out.

  2. Kale Fortress 21 min

You see the hilltop fortress overlooking the old bazaar and the river, and I explain how its walls have been rebuilt across several different periods of rule.

  3. Museum of Macedonia 21 min

The camera reaches a museum built around a former Ottoman caravanserai and bathhouse, and I point out how the building itself is as much a part of the collection as anything inside it.

  4. Mustafa Pasha Mosque 21 min

You see a fifteenth-century mosque above the old bazaar, and I explain the decoration inside its portico, painted and repainted several times since it was first built.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Skopje: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Ajvar and Centar, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Skopje time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
