About this tour

This session traces Sofia from the Roman paving beneath the Largo to the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, taking in a longer stretch than a quick overview allows. You see the fourth-century St George Rotunda and a cluster of mosque, synagogue and churches within a five-minute walk of each other. It closes at the mineral water fountains where locals still fill bottles daily.

The guide checks sound at the Largo, then walks the route roughly in the order the city itself developed, layer by layer. Questions can come in about any religion, ruler or building along the way. A short list of the sites and their dates is sent on afterwards.

This suits history readers who want Sofia's layers explained in more depth than a one-hour overview allows. It also suits anyone curious how so many faiths ended up sharing so little space.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Sofia before heading out.

  2. The Largo's Roman streets 21 min

Underneath the Largo the camera follows a stretch of Roman paving preserved below street level, visible through glass floors government buildings were built around. The guide explains how much of ancient Serdica is still being uncovered by accident.

  3. St George Rotunda and the faith cluster 21 min

The camera circles the fourth-century St George Rotunda before crossing to find a mosque, a synagogue and two churches all within a five-minute walk. The guide explains how this compact mix of faiths came about under different rulers.

  4. The mineral water fountains 21 min

At the mineral water fountains the camera shows people filling bottles from taps running warm straight out of the ground. The guide explains where the water comes from before the walk ends outside the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Sofia: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Shopska salad and City Centre, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • Times are shown in Sofia time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
