About this tour

This session follows the Zinfandel story through the wine cellars and fortified villages of Kaštela. The camera moves between two family cellars pouring Crljenak kaštelanski, the grape confirmed by DNA testing to be the same as Zinfandel, then through the walls of Kaštel Novi and along the Kaštela seafront. Wine and defence turn out to share the same stretch of coast.

After the sound check, the walk moves cellar to cellar before finishing outdoors along the water, with questions taken between stops on both the wine and the history. A short note on the Zinfandel connection goes out once the call ends.

This suits anyone with an interest in wine who has heard the Zinfandel story and wants it explained at the source, and anyone curious about the fortified villages along this stretch of the Adriatic. It also suits someone planning their own visit to the Kaštela cellars.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Split before heading out.

  2. First family cellar 21 min

In the first cellar, the guide opens a bottle of Crljenak kaštelanski, the local grape confirmed by DNA testing to be the same as Zinfandel, and explains how that discovery changed the region's reputation.

  3. Second family cellar 21 min

At a second cellar nearby, the guide pours from a different bottling of the same grape and explains what changes between two family producers working a few streets apart.

  4. Kaštel Novi 21 min

Walking into the fortified village of Kaštel Novi, the camera follows its old defensive walls, built when this coast needed protecting from the sea rather than showing it off.

  5. Kaštela seafront 21 min

The last stretch follows the Kaštela seafront, the camera taking in the row of fortified villages along the water while the guide talks through why each one was built where it stands.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Split: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Crni rižot (black risotto) and Diocletian's Palace, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • Times are shown in Zagreb time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
