Silver Gate and the fish market
Highlights
- A plainer, working Roman gate
- A fish market open for generations
- Sea air keeping smells surprisingly mild
- Roman stone beside a working market
- Split's seafood, from the source
About this tour
This session pairs the Silver Gate, one of Diocletian's Palace's four original entrances, with the covered fish market that has traded just outside it for generations. You see the gate's plainer, more functional style compared to the grander Golden Gate, then the market stalls themselves as the morning trade gets going. It ties Roman stonework to a market still working the same way today.
We start at the gate with a sound check, then move into the market for the second stop, taking questions about the stallholders and the catch that day. I send a short list of what was on offer once the call ends.
It suits anyone curious about where Split's seafood actually comes from. It also suits an early booking, since the market is busiest before mid-morning.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Split before heading out.
-
Silver Gate 15 min
The camera looks up at the Silver Gate, one of the palace's four original entrances, and I point out how it differs in style from the grander Golden Gate.
-
The fish market 15 min
Just beyond it, I walk the covered fish market, and I explain why the sea air keeps the smell famously mild even without refrigeration.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Split: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Croatian wine and Varoš, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Zagreb time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
