About this tour

This session covers Toledo's two historic bridges, Alcántara on the eastern side and San Martín on the western side of the gorge. You see the mix of Roman origins and medieval rebuilding on one bridge and one of the best views of the old town from the other. It is an outdoor session built around water and stone rather than streets.

We move between the two at an easy pace, since the walk along the gorge between them is itself worth showing. I point out construction details on each bridge, drawing on my engineering background. Questions about the gorge and the river below come up as often as questions about the bridges themselves.

This suits anyone who wants Toledo's setting explained as much as its buildings. It also works well for a first look at the city before exploring the streets inside the walls.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Toledo before heading out.

  2. Puente de Alcántara 21 min

The Roman-origin bridge crosses the gorge on the city's eastern side, rebuilt several times since its original construction. I point out which arches date from the medieval rebuild and which are more recent repairs.

  3. Puente de San Martín 21 min

On the western side, this bridge offers one of the best views back at the old town rising above the gorge. I explain why the city needed a second crossing so close to the first.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Toledo: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Carcamusas and Santa Leocadia, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Madrid time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
