About this tour

This session looks at Utrecht through its most famous museum and one of its most famous illustrators, whose small rabbit character has its own crossing in the city. You see the museum building that holds his original drawings alongside Rietveld furniture, and then the actual street crossing designed in his honour nearby. It is a session about local design as much as fine art.

We spend the most time at the museum exterior and courtyard, since that is where the architecture itself does a lot of the talking, then walk a short distance to the crossing. I take questions in German as readily as English.

It suits families explaining a familiar character to children as much as design-minded adults. Viewers who grew up with the rabbit's books abroad are often surprised to learn where he came from.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Utrecht before heading out.

  2. Centraal Museum Exterior 21 min

You see the museum building that holds the city's collection of local art, design and fashion, and I explain why a Gerrit Rietveld chair sits at the centre of its design collection.

  3. Nijntje Pleintje 21 min

The camera settles on a small pedestrian crossing designed after a famous local rabbit character, and I explain why the illustrator behind it is still one of the city's most celebrated residents.

  4. Museum Courtyard 21 min

We finish in the museum's courtyard, and I point out how the modern extension sits against the older buildings around it.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Utrecht: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Stroopwafel and Binnenstad, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Amsterdam time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
