Stone Forest, an unexplained field
Highlights
- Stone columns millions of years old
- A formation still not fully explained
- Mineral bands read up close
- The scale of a whole stone field
- Nature away from the city centre
About this tour
This session walks the Stone Forest, a field of natural stone columns outside the city that still puzzles geologists. You see the columns up close, their mineral banding explained, and then the scale of the whole field from a distance. It stays within this one natural site.
I walk between the columns slowly, since the ground is uneven in places, and I stop properly to explain the leading theories on how they formed. Questions about the science come up often, and I answer as much as current research allows.
This suits anyone drawn to natural landscapes rather than only city monuments. It also works well as a change of pace after a day of history sessions in the centre.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide
- Questions to your guide all the way
- A short list of places to visit later
Not included
- Internet connection
- Travel to the city
Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Varna before heading out.
-
Stone Columns 21 min
The camera moves among the natural stone columns rising from the sand, and I explain the leading theories on how they formed millions of years ago.
-
Column Formations Close Up 21 min
You see the texture of a column up close, and I point out the mineral bands that hint at how it grew from the ground rather than fell onto it.
-
Wider Field View 21 min
From a distance, the camera shows the scale of the whole field, and I explain why geologists still disagree on parts of the formation's history.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Varna: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Grilled turbot and Chaika, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Sofia time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How it works

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
