About this tour

This session covers Piazza delle Erbe, Verona's oldest square, still holding a market on the site of the old Roman forum. You see the stalls filling the square as they have for centuries, then look up at the frescoed facades surrounding it, remarkably intact given their age. It is a street-level look at a square that has never really stopped being used the same way.

We start with a sound check among the stalls, since the market can be lively through the morning. I move to look up at the facades for the second stop and take your questions about the square's history as we go. A short reading list follows by message afterwards.

It suits anyone with an interest in Roman continuity or simply a busy local market. It also works well as a morning session before the square gets busier.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Verona before heading out.

  2. Piazza delle Erbe market 21 min

The camera moves past the market stalls filling the square, and I explain how the space has held a market on this exact spot since Roman times, when it was the city's forum.

  3. Piazza delle Erbe facades 21 min

We look up at the frescoed buildings ringing the square, and I point out how much of the original paintwork has survived despite centuries of weather.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Verona: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Lesso e pearà and Centro storico, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
