About this tour

This session walks the Ringstrasse, the boulevard that replaced Vienna's old city walls, from the State Opera to the university district. You see the Albertina terrace, the Hofburg's Heldenplatz balcony and the run of Parliament, the Rathaus and the Burgtheater. It ends near the Votivkirche, built with the same money as everything before it.

The guide starts with a sound check outside the opera house, then walks the boulevard building by building at an even pace. Questions can come in on the architecture, the money behind it or the history tied to Heldenplatz specifically. A short list naming each building and its date arrives after the call.

This suits anyone who wants the Ringstrasse explained building by building rather than glimpsed from a tram. It also suits those interested in how Vienna handles the harder history attached to Heldenplatz.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Vienna before heading out.

  2. State Opera and Albertina terrace 21 min

The camera starts at the Vienna State Opera, one of the world's busiest opera houses, then climbs to the Albertina terrace above it. The guide points along the Ringstrasse toward the buildings coming up on the route.

  3. Heldenplatz 21 min

On Heldenplatz the camera turns to the Hofburg balcony where Hitler addressed crowds in 1938. The guide explains the weight this square still carries and how Vienna has chosen to mark, or not mark, that history.

  4. Parliament, Rathaus and the university 21 min

In one sweep the camera takes in Parliament, the Rathaus and the Burgtheater, three grand buildings raised within a few decades of each other. The guide finishes at the university and the Votivkirche, built by the same wave of new money in 1870.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Vienna: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Sachertorte and Leopoldstadt, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Vienna time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
