Wilanow Palace: the Polish Versailles
Highlights
- A palace built to rival Versailles
- State rooms, seen from the garden side
- Details commissioned by a specific king
- Baroque architecture, explained in depth
- Wilanow's facade, from three angles
About this tour
This session covers Wilanow Palace, sometimes called the Polish Versailles, through its Baroque facade, garden-side state rooms and entrance courtyard. You see the building from three different angles, each showing a different aspect of its design. It is a close look at a palace built to project the ambitions of the king who commissioned it.
We begin at the main facade with a short sound check, then move around the garden side and finally the courtyard, pausing at each to explain the design choices. I take questions throughout and connect details to the king's specific intentions. A written list of the palace's history follows afterwards.
It suits anyone with an interest in Baroque architecture or Polish royal history. It also pairs well with a session on the palace gardens for the fuller estate.
