Highlights

  • The square that ties three museums together
  • Why the square was kept open, not built on
  • The world's largest Van Gogh collection, from outside
  • A modern glass hall added to an older building
  • An overview before planning your own museum day

About this tour

This session looks at the square that anchors Amsterdam's museum quarter and the building that holds the world's largest Van Gogh collection, all from outside rather than through a ticketed entrance. You see how the square was deliberately kept open as green space between the surrounding museums, and then the modern glass hall added to the Van Gogh Museum's original building. It sets up the area for anyone planning a museum visit of their own.

We start on the open square and move to the museum entrance, timing the visit for a quieter stretch of the day when the square is easier to film. I explain what each nearby museum actually holds so you can decide which one to prioritise.

It suits anyone planning their own museum day and wanting an overview first. It also works well for viewers who cannot get tickets this time and want to see the area regardless.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Amsterdam before heading out.

  2. Museumplein 21 min

You see the wide green square that ties three of the city's biggest museums together, and I explain why it was left open rather than built over.

  3. Van Gogh Museum Exterior 21 min

The camera holds on the museum's modern glass entrance hall, and I explain how the building holds the largest collection of Van Gogh's paintings and letters anywhere in the world without us stepping inside.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Amsterdam: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Stroopwafel and De Pijp, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Amsterdam time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
