  • Lithuania's oldest known stone castle
  • Weapons and models from the castle museum
  • Where the river once reshaped the walls

About this tour

This session walks the outer wall of Kaunas Castle before finishing inside its small museum. You see the thick medieval stonework beside the sections rebuilt in the twentieth century, and the round tower that survived when the river shifted and took part of the original structure with it. It is a close look at Lithuania's oldest known stone castle.

I start with a sound check by the wall, then move along the stonework to the tower before heading inside for the museum. Questions are welcome throughout, and I send a short note afterwards on what was original and what was rebuilt.

This suits anyone curious about medieval Lithuania or the country's early stone architecture. It also works as a first stop before a longer walk through the rest of the old town.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Not included

  • Internet connection

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Kaunas before heading out.

  2. The Outer Wall 21 min

You see the thick outer wall of Kaunas Castle, and I point out where the original medieval stonework ends and the twentieth-century rebuilding begins.

  3. The Round Tower 21 min

The camera turns up towards the surviving round tower, one of the few original medieval sections left standing after the river shifted and took part of the castle with it.

  4. Inside the Castle Museum 21 min

Inside, I show weapons and models from the museum and explain how Kaunas Castle became the oldest stone castle known in Lithuania.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Kaunas: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cepelinai and Senamiestis (Old Town), worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Vilnius time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
