About this tour

This session shows the Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis, a working Roman theatre still hosting concerts nearly two thousand years after it was built. You see the full curve of stone seating, the stage area still used for performances, and a view over the city from the highest row. The camera stays within the theatre throughout.

We open with a short sound check at the entrance. I keep a formal, detailed pace and take questions about how the theatre survived long enough to be restored as we go. Afterwards I send a short note on its history and current concert programme.

This suits anyone with a serious interest in Roman history and architecture. It also works well as an opening session before the rest of Plovdiv's old town.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Plovdiv before heading out.

  2. The full curve of seating 17 min

The camera holds a wide shot on the theatre's stone seating, and I explain how it was built in the first century and rediscovered only in the twentieth.

  3. The stage area 17 min

We move closer to the stage, and I point out how the theatre is still used for concerts nearly two thousand years after it was built.

  4. The view from the top row 17 min

The session finishes at the highest row of seats, and I name the hills and rooftops visible across the city from here.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Plovdiv: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Shopska salad and Old Town, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Sofia time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
