Along the Motława, to the old crane
Highlights
- Merchant houses along the Motława
- A crane that lifted ships' masts
- Twin wooden towers, medieval engineering
- Old granaries seen from the water
- The working river behind the main square
About this tour
This session follows the Motława riverfront to the medieval crane and across to the footbridge opposite. You see the merchant houses along the embankment, the crane's twin wooden towers up close, and the old granary buildings on Ołowianka Island from across the water. It stays with the working river rather than the main square.
I start with a sound check on the embankment, then walk along the water to the crane before crossing to the footbridge for the wider view. Questions are welcome throughout, and I send a short note afterwards on how the crane actually worked.
This suits anyone curious about medieval engineering or Hanseatic trade. It also works well before or after a session on the main square, for a fuller picture of how the city functioned.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Gdansk before heading out.
-
The Motława Embankment 21 min
You see the row of merchant houses reflected in the Motława river, and I explain how this waterfront handled most of the city's trade for centuries.
-
The Crane (Żuraw) 21 min
The camera settles on the medieval crane's twin wooden towers, and I explain how it once lifted ships' masts and heavy cargo higher than anything else on this stretch of coast.
-
Ołowianka Footbridge 21 min
From the footbridge opposite, I show the crane's full height against the water and point out the old granary buildings on the island behind it.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Gdansk: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Goldwasser liqueur and Oliwa, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
