About this tour

This session climbs the terraced vineyard below Sanssouci Palace, from the heated niches at the bottom to Frederick the Great's rococo facade at the top. You see the glass-covered planting pockets built to grow figs this far north, then the low, single-storey palace itself, built plain by royal standards. The walk finishes along the balustrade, where a row of sculpted figures line the terrace edge.

We start with a short sound check at the base of the terraces, since there is often a breeze here. I climb slowly, stopping on each level so you can see the planting and the building grow closer together. Afterwards I send a short note on the garden's layout and the fig varieties still grown there.

This suits anyone curious about how the palace and its garden were designed together rather than as separate visits. It also works well as a first look at Sanssouci before a longer park session.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Potsdam before heading out.

  2. Vineyard steps below the palace 17 min

The camera starts at the bottom of the terraced vineyard, and I point out the glass-covered niches built into the steps to trap heat for the fig trees planted there.

  3. Sanssouci Palace facade 17 min

We climb to the top terrace and the single-storey rococo palace comes into view, and I explain why Frederick the Great built it low and plain compared to other royal residences of the period.

  4. The terrace figures 17 min

Along the balustrade the camera passes a row of sculpted figures, and I point out how each one was carved to be seen from the garden below rather than up close.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Potsdam: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Havelländische Zander (pike-perch from local lakes) and Holländisches Viertel, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • Times are shown in Berlin time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
