Römerberg, a square rebuilt from drawings

- A city hall rebuilt from historical drawings
- Half-timbered houses, old and rebuilt
- Wartime destruction and careful reconstruction
- The heart of Frankfurt's old town

About this tour
This session studies Römerberg, the medieval square at the heart of the old town, and how carefully its buildings were reconstructed after wartime destruction. You see the step-gabled Römer city hall and the half-timbered houses around the square, and hear which parts are faithful rebuilds and which survived the war intact. It stays within the square throughout.
We hold the frame on the Römer first, since the facade rewards a longer look, then take in the wider square. I explain the reconstruction history in stages and take questions about specific buildings as they come. A short timeline of the square follows by message.
It suits anyone interested in postwar reconstruction and how a historic square can be rebuilt faithfully. It also pairs well with a Kaiserdom session for a fuller picture of the old town's history.

-
Römer city hall 21 min
The camera holds on the step-gabled facade of the Römer, and I explain how it was reconstructed after wartime destruction using historical drawings rather than guesswork.
-
Römerberg square 21 min
Looking across the square, you see the half-timbered houses lining it, and I point out which sections are careful reconstructions and which survived largely intact.

Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Frankfurt: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Apfelwein (cider) and Altstadt, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
