About this tour

This session covers the Ducal Palace and the older castle above it, both seen from their courtyards and surrounding grounds rather than from inside the ticketed rooms. Sofia starts at the palace's long granite facade before crossing its inner courtyard, then climbs the short distance to the castle walls. Along the way she explains how a building can fall into ruin for centuries and still be rebuilt as a national symbol.

Sofia checks the connection before starting at the facade, keeping the camera steady as she moves between the two sites. She answers questions about the period in real time and does not rush past a detail if someone wants more on it. A short note on the palace's rebuilding follows the call.

This suits anyone interested in Portugal's early history or in how a ruined building gets reclaimed as a symbol. It also works as a first session in Guimarães, since both sites anchor the city's older story.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Guimaraes before heading out.

  2. The palace facade 21 min

The camera holds on the long granite facade and its row of tall brick chimneys, one of the most photographed profiles in northern Portugal. Sofia points out how the design borrows from Burgundian palaces the first duke had seen abroad.

  3. The inner courtyard 21 min

Inside the arcaded courtyard, you see the scale of the building from ground level, timber galleries running along two sides. Sofia explains how the palace stood roofless and abandoned for centuries before its 20th-century rebuilding.

  4. The castle walls above 21 min

A short distance uphill, the camera reaches the granite keep and surrounding walls, seen from the gardens below rather than from inside the tower. Sofia points out the narrow original entrance and explains what still stands from the 10th century.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Guimaraes: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Toucinho do céu (Guimarães style) and Centro Histórico, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Lisbon time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
