Heidelberg Castle's broken towers
Highlights
- A wall sheared open by explosion
- A wine barrel built for a court
- The Old Bridge seen from above
- Centuries of war and lightning damage
- Heidelberg's ruin, explained wing by wing
About this tour
This session opens on the castle's broken Renaissance facade before moving into the cellar and out onto the terrace. You see the exact wall sheared open by an eighteenth-century explosion, the vast wine barrel built into the cellar, and the full view of the Old Bridge from above. It stays inside the castle grounds rather than covering the wider old town.
I start with a short sound check at the gate, then move steadily between the three stops as the story unfolds. Questions come whenever you have them, and I send a short note afterwards covering the dates we discussed.
This suits anyone curious about the castle's slow decline through war and lightning rather than only its grand rooms. It also works well as a first session before exploring the rest of the old town.
Included

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Heidelberg before heading out.
-
Castle Facade 17 min
You see the red sandstone front of the Renaissance palace, and I point out the exact line where an explosion in 1693 sheared through the upper wall.
-
The Great Vat Cellar 17 min
Inside the cellar, the camera finds the enormous wine barrel built to hold over two hundred thousand litres, and I explain why a court once needed one this size.
-
Terrace View Over the Neckar 17 min
From the castle terrace, you see the Old Bridge and the rooftops of the old town laid out along the river below.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Heidelberg: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Spätzle and Altstadt, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Berlin time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
