  • Roman foundations layered beneath the square
  • One spot, three centuries explained

About this tour

This session tells the story of Utrecht's most recognisable building and the strange gap beside it. You see the Dom Tower standing alone, the open square where its nave collapsed in a single storm in 1674, and the entrance to the archaeological site that runs beneath it all. Three views of the same spot, three very different centuries.

We start at the tower itself and work outward across the square, timing our stops so the light on the tower is at its best mid-morning or mid-afternoon. I leave the archaeological layers for last since they tend to raise the most questions.

It suits anyone who likes a single spot explained properly rather than a long route covered quickly. Viewers planning their own climb up the tower often book this one first.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Utrecht before heading out.

  2. Dom Tower 17 min

You see the tallest church tower in the country rising straight out of the surrounding rooftops, and I explain why it now stands apart from its own church.

  3. Domplein 17 min

The camera pans across the open square where the cathedral's nave once stood, and I point out the outline marked in the paving where the walls used to run.

  4. DOMunder Entrance 17 min

We stop at the entrance to the archaeological site beneath the square, and I describe the Roman fort and church foundations layered underneath us that a visit down there reveals.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Utrecht: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Dutch cheese (Gouda, Edam) and Binnenstad, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Amsterdam time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
