The Peristyle at midday
Highlights
- Red granite columns from Roman times
- A sphinx brought from Egypt
- The palace's ceremonial heart
- Split's most photographed square
- Midday light down ancient columns
About this tour
This session sits in the Peristyle, the ceremonial square at the heart of Diocletian's Palace, timed for when the midday light runs straight down the columns. You see the red granite columns themselves and then the black granite sphinx at the square's edge, brought from Egypt during the Roman period. It is the most photographed corner of the old town, explained properly.
We start under the columns with a sound check, then move to the sphinx for the second stop, taking questions about the square's original ceremonial use. A short note follows once the call ends.
It suits a first stop for anyone new to Split's old town. It also works well timed around midday specifically, when the square is at its brightest.

The Peristyle columns 15 min
The camera looks up the red granite columns lining the square, and I explain how this was the ceremonial heart of the emperor's palace.
-
The sphinx 15 min
We move to the black granite sphinx at the square's edge, brought from Egypt in Roman times, and I point out how worn its surface has become.

-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Crni rižot (black risotto) and Diocletian's Palace, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
