Arthur's Seat, an extinct volcano above the city
Highlights
- A volcano inside the city
- Salisbury Crags' ancient rock columns
- The view over the Firth of Forth
- Grass giving way to bare rock
- Every landmark named from the summit
About this tour
This session climbs Arthur's Seat, an extinct volcano that sits right inside the city, from the lower path through Holyrood Park up past Salisbury Crags to the summit. You see the grass give way to bare rock, the columns in the crag face, and finally the full view over Edinburgh toward the Firth of Forth. Fiona explains how the hill was formed and what's visible from the top on a clear day.
After a sound check at the park gates, the climb happens in stages, with a pause at the crags and another near the top for questions. Fiona keeps the pace steady so the phone stays stable, and sends a short list of the landmarks visible from the summit afterwards.
It suits anyone curious about the geology beneath a capital city, and works well as a first look at Edinburgh's layout before a visit. It is also a good session for those who enjoy a proper walk.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Edinburgh before heading out.
-
The path up from Holyrood Park 21 min
The camera follows the lower path as it climbs away from the park gates, the city dropping away behind. Fiona points out how the grass gives way to bare volcanic rock further up.
-
Salisbury Crags 21 min
The cliff face of Salisbury Crags runs alongside the path, dark rock formed by an ancient volcanic sill. She explains how the rock cooled to form the columns visible in the cliff.
-
The summit view 21 min
From the top, the whole city spreads out toward the Firth of Forth. Fiona names the landmarks visible from the summit, from the Castle to the bridges in the distance.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Edinburgh: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Haggis, neeps and tatties and Leith, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
