Castello Svevo's walls, seen from the moat
Highlights
- A dry moat most visitors walk straight past
- Frederick II's expansion of a Norman fort
- An Aragonese wing in a different style
- The scale of the outer walls
- A castle read from its defences, not its rooms
About this tour
This session stays on the outside of Castello Svevo, following the moat and outer walls rather than heading straight into the courtyard. You see the scale of the fortification Frederick II expanded, and the later Aragonese wing added in a different style. It is a look at the castle's defences rather than its interior rooms.
I walk the moat side first and hold the phone on the walls while I explain the different building phases, then move round to the Aragonese wing. I answer questions throughout and send a short note afterwards on the castle's history.
This suits anyone interested in medieval fortification rather than only interior museums. It also pairs well with a session on the old town lanes nearby.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Bari before heading out.
-
The castle moat 15 min
You see the dry moat and outer walls that most visitors miss while heading straight to the courtyard, and I explain how Frederick II expanded the original Norman structure.
-
The Aragonese wing 15 min
I point out the later additions made under an Aragonese princess, a different style set against the older Norman-Swabian stonework.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Bari: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Focaccia barese and Murat, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
