The Basílica del Pilar and the square around it
Highlights
- A pillar said to mark an apparition
- One of Europe's largest public squares
- Baroque domes above the Ebro
- Where the old town meets the river
- Zaragoza's basilica, explained plainly
About this tour
This session shows the Basílica del Pilar and the vast square it sits within, one of Europe's largest public spaces. You see the basilica's Baroque domes from the riverbank and the open square connecting it to the old town. Marta explains the story behind the pillar the basilica was built to honour.
The walk moves from the riverside view of the basilica into the square itself, with Marta explaining how pilgrims and locals use the space differently depending on the time of day. She answers questions about the basilica's history as they come up.
This suits anyone interested in religious history as much as architecture and public space. It also works well as a first stop before Marta's planning call for a fuller day in the old town.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
