HafenCity's waterfront, block by block
Highlights
- Flood-proof plinths under new blocks
- A basin of old cranes and new glass
- A working port turned public space
- One of Europe's largest redevelopments
- A promenade beside the water
About this tour
This session walks HafenCity's waterfront, the new development built directly onto former harbour land beside the Speicherstadt. You see raised plinths built against flooding and a basin where old cranes stand next to new glass architecture. Lena explains how a working port became one of Europe's largest inner city redevelopments.
The walk covers a single stretch of promenade at an easy pace, pausing at the basin for its view back toward the older warehouses. Lena takes questions about the redevelopment as we go.
This suits anyone curious about urban redevelopment or contemporary architecture. It pairs naturally with her Speicherstadt session next door.

New harbour blocks 15 min
The camera moves along HafenCity's waterfront promenade, and I point out how the new apartment and office blocks are built to flood-proof standards on raised plinths.
-
Grasbrook basin 15 min
We reach a wide basin where old harbour cranes stand beside new glass buildings, and I explain how the district turned a working port into public space.

Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Hamburg: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Aalsuppe (eel soup) and Speicherstadt / HafenCity, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
