About this tour

This session climbs from the outer walls of the Fortezza to its highest bastion, built after a raid that burned much of Rethymno in the sixteenth century. You see the old barracks and storerooms along the way and end with the whole harbour and old town laid out below. It follows the same route I have walked with school groups for years.

I keep a steady pace up the slope so the camera does not shake, pausing at each old building to explain its original use, then let the summit view speak for itself. Questions come throughout, and I try to time the climb before the afternoon light flattens.

This suits anyone who wants the town's whole layout explained from above before exploring it at street level. It also works well as a first session on arriving in Rethymno.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Rethymno before heading out.

  2. Fortezza perimeter 17 min

You see the outer walls of the fortress, and I explain how the whole structure was built after pirates burned much of the town in the sixteenth century.

  3. Climb path to the summit 17 min

The camera follows the path upward between old barracks and storerooms, and I point out which buildings inside the walls still stand from the original construction.

  4. Highest bastion 17 min

From the top you see the whole horseshoe harbour and the old town rooftops at once, and I explain why this position was chosen over any other in the area.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Rethymno: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Dakos and Old Town, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Athens time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
