Where five hundred held the walls
Highlights
- A garrison that held against far greater numbers
- Damage still visible in the old stonework
- An 1552 siege explained wall by wall
- Supplies kept in an inner courtyard
- One of Hungary's best known defences
About this tour
This session looks at Eger Castle through the siege that made it famous, from the outer walls to the inner courtyard. You see where the defences held and where supplies were kept, with an explanation of how so few defenders managed to hold out. It stays within the castle walls throughout.
I keep a formal, detailed pace after a short sound check, since the siege has more strategy to it than a quick summary allows. Questions about specific moments in the defence come up on almost every call.
This suits anyone with a serious interest in military history rather than a general castle overview. It also works well before the minaret session for a fuller picture of the town's Ottoman-era history.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

- A short list of places to visit later

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Eger before heading out.
-
Castle Outer Walls 21 min
The camera moves along the outer defences, and I explain how the castle's small garrison held out against an Ottoman army many times its size in 1552.
-
Inner Courtyard 21 min
You see the inner courtyard where supplies and reinforcements were kept during the siege, and I point out damage still visible in the older stonework.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Eger: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Egri Bikavér (Bull's Blood wine) and Belváros (Town Centre), worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Budapest time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
