Roman Forum, the ruins that ran an empire
Highlights
- Wheel ruts worn into ancient paving
- Columns from Rome's old state treasury
- A senate house read from outside
- An empire's centre, rebuilt in words
- Ruins that make sense once explained
About this tour
This session walks the Sacred Way through the Roman Forum, once the political and commercial centre of the ancient world and now a field of scattered ruins. You see wheel ruts worn into the paving, the surviving columns of the Temple of Saturn, and the old senate house from outside. It rebuilds the space in words rather than leaving it as rubble.
I walk the route slowly and stop wherever a ruin needs context to make sense, taking questions throughout on how the different buildings connected. I send a short note afterwards with a simple map of what we saw.
This suits anyone who finds ruins hard to read without guidance. It also pairs well with a session on the Colosseum or Palatine Hill right next door.

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Rome before heading out.

The Sacred Way 17 min
You walk the paved road that ran through the political heart of the ancient city, and I point out ruts worn into the stone by centuries of traffic.
-
The Temple of Saturn 17 min
I show the surviving columns of the temple that once held Rome's state treasury, explaining what the building's role actually was.
-
The Curia 17 min
From outside the old senate house I describe how debates that shaped an empire once happened inside these same walls.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Rome: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Amatriciana and Testaccio, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
