Göreme's painted churches, from the courtyard
Highlights
- Rock-cut chapels across the hillside
- Frescoes described from the courtyard
- Small window openings in the facades
- A religious community carved into rock
- A wider valley of cones and chapels
About this tour
This session looks at Göreme's rock-cut chapels from outside the open air museum, since the painted interiors are described from the courtyard rather than filmed on camera. You see the chapel facades cut into the hillside, then a wider view of the valley where a religious community once lived among the rock. The session focuses on how the site was built rather than recreating what is inside each chapel.
I start with a sound check outside the grounds, then we move along the path stop by stop while you ask questions about the chapels. I pause a little longer at the facades, since the window openings are easy to miss without them being pointed out. Afterwards I send a short written note on the names and dates we covered.
This suits anyone curious about Cappadocia's religious history who understands the interiors themselves stay off camera. It also works well before or after visiting the site yourself.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Cappadocia before heading out.
-
Museum Courtyard Approach 17 min
From outside the museum grounds, the camera looks up at rock-cut chapels dotted across the hillside. I explain why the frescoes inside are described from the courtyard rather than filmed inside the chapels themselves.
-
Chapel Facades 17 min
You see a row of carved facades along the path, each marking a different chapel cut into the rock. I point out the small window openings and what they tell us about how the chapels were originally lit.
-
Valley Overlook 17 min
From a rise above the museum grounds, the camera takes in the wider valley of cones and chapels together. I explain how a religious community chose this cluster of rock centuries ago.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Cappadocia: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Local wine and Göreme, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
