The Grand Canal, palazzo by palazzo
Highlights
- Palazzi named one by one
- Gothic arches, centuries old
- Gold leaf, long since faded
- The Grand Canal's curve, explained
- Venice's wealth, built in stone
About this tour
This session looks at the Grand Canal through its palazzi rather than as a single sweeping view. You see the canal's curve with several buildings named in turn, then move closer to one Gothic facade to look at details that have lost their original gold leaf over centuries. It is a focused look at Venetian Gothic architecture along the city's main waterway.
We start with a sound check at the viewpoint, since passing boats can be loud. I move closer for the second stop and take your questions about any of the buildings as we go. A short reading list on Venetian Gothic architecture follows by message afterwards.
It suits anyone with an interest in architecture or Venetian history through its wealthy families. It also works well paired with a session on Ca' d'Oro nearby.
Included

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Venice before heading out.
-
Grand Canal viewpoint 21 min
The camera looks along the canal's curve, and I name a few of the palazzi lining it and the families who built them centuries ago.
-
Palazzo facade detail 21 min
We move closer to one Gothic facade, and I point out the pointed arches and how gold leaf once covered stonework that now shows only bare stone.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Venice: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Risotto al nero di seppia and Dorsoduro, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

Verified booking
Worth every cent
Our guide knew every corner and the stories behind it. We learned more in two hours than in a week of reading.
How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
