About this tour

This session links Banská Štiavnica's two castles, built within a few decades of each other purely to watch for Ottoman raids. You see the fortified walls of the Old Castle, its courtyard and gun ports, then the hillside route up to the white tower of the New Castle. It is a two-hour look at a defence system that never had to prove itself in a real siege here.

I start at the Old Castle and climb steadily toward the New Castle, explaining the wider Ottoman-era context as we go. Questions come in throughout, especially about how the warning system actually worked between towers. A short list of dates and names follows once we finish.

This suits anyone with a serious interest in Central European military history rather than a quick highlights reel. It runs a full two hours, so it works best as a main session rather than an add-on.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Banská Štiavnica before heading out.

  2. Starý zámok Walls 21 min

You see the fortified church walls of the Old Castle, raised in the 16th century when Ottoman raids reached this far into the mining region.

  3. Old Castle Courtyard 21 min

Inside, the camera holds on the courtyard, now a museum floor, and I point out the gun ports cut into walls built for prayer rather than defence.

  4. Path to the New Castle 21 min

Between the two sites, you see the hillside route linking them, the same line of sight the watchtower needed to work.

  5. Nový zámok Tower 21 min

At the white watchtower, I explain how it never fired a shot in anger, built purely to relay warning of Ottoman movement further south.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Banská Štiavnica: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Kapustnica and Frauenberg, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • Times are shown in Bratislava time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
