The cathedral's four facades, four centuries
Highlights
- Four facades, four centuries
- The cathedral's plainer, older face
- A Romanesque doorway still standing
- One building, several rebuilds
- Comparing every side of the cathedral
About this tour
This session circles the cathedral to compare its four very different facades, each added or rebuilt in a different century. You see the plainer north face and the Romanesque doorway on the silversmiths' side, both older in feel than the main Baroque front. Uxía explains why a single building ended up with four distinct faces.
The walk moves around the building rather than into it, pausing at each facade long enough to compare details before moving to the next. Uxía answers questions about the building's long construction history as they come up.
This suits anyone who has already seen the main square and wants the fuller picture. It also works well for viewers interested in how a Romanesque church became a Baroque one over time.

Praza da Inmaculada facade 21 min
From the north side of the cathedral, the camera shows an older, plainer facade than the one in the main square, closer to how the building looked in the twelfth century.
-
Praza das Praterías 21 min
Around the corner, the Romanesque silversmiths' doorway is the oldest surviving cathedral entrance still visible from outside, and I explain what changed here compared with the other three facades.

Time to ask anything about Santiago de Compostela: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Empanada gallega and Zona Nova, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
