San Giusto, a cathedral built from two churches
Highlights
- A cathedral formed from two churches
- Roman stone, built into the walls
- Three periods, in one building
- Trieste's oldest surviving remains
- History, layered on one hill
About this tour
This session covers Trieste's cathedral, San Giusto, formed by joining two older churches together. You see the plain exterior that resulted from this merger, then move to a side wall to look at fragments of a Roman temple built directly into the structure. It is a short session on how one building can hold three very different periods at once.
We start with a sound check facing the facade, since the hill can be breezy. I move to the side wall for the second stop and take your questions about the cathedral's layered construction as we go. A short reading list follows by message afterwards.
It suits anyone with an interest in how churches get built from older fragments. It also works well paired with a session at the castle right beside it.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
