The fortress and the tower built to frighten
Highlights
- A gate guarding the old town for centuries
- A tower built as a warning, not a memorial
- An 1809 battle, seen from both sides
- Roman and medieval defences beneath Ottoman stone
- Niš history few visitors know in detail
About this tour
This session moves between two of Niš's most striking sites, the fortress gate and the Skull Tower nearby. You see the stone entrance that has guarded the old town for centuries, then a tower built as a warning rather than a monument. It stays within a short walk of the fortress throughout.
After a brief sound check I take the two stops in order, since the tower's story lands better once the fortress context is set first. Questions about the 1809 battle come up almost every time, and I leave plenty of room for them.
This suits anyone with a serious interest in the region's Ottoman-era history rather than a lighter overview. It also works well before a session on Ćegar Hill, where the same battle is explained from the Serbian side.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide
- Questions to your guide all the way
- A short list of places to visit later
Not included
- Internet connection

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Niš before heading out.
-
Niš Fortress Gate 21 min
The camera passes through the stone gate that has served as the main entrance to the old town since Ottoman times, and I explain how Roman and medieval defences stood on this same ground long before it.
-
Skull Tower 21 min
You see the stone tower still holding skulls set into its walls, and I explain how it was built by Ottoman forces after an 1809 battle as a warning rather than a memorial.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Niš: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Roštilj (grilled meat) and Tvrđava (Fortress Old Town), worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Belgrade time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
