I grew up a few streets from the fortress walls, and I still think Niš's history gets underestimated next to its Ottoman fortress alone. On camera I move between the Skull Tower and the fortress gate, showing where a defeated army built a monument meant to frighten rather than commemorate. I studied history at the local university and keep coming back to the 1809 battle at Ćegar, where the story changes depending on which side tells it. I keep my sessions fairly detailed and welcome long stretches of questions once each stop is finished.
