Highlights

  • A monument built partly from grim stone
  • The other half of a well known story
  • A hillside battlefield, explained on the way up

About this tour

This session climbs the hill outside central Niš where a defining battle of 1809 came to its end. You see the approach to the site and then the memorial at its summit, with the full story of the commander's final decision explained along the way. It stays on the hill throughout.

I keep a measured pace on the climb, pausing partway to explain the wider battle before reaching the monument itself. Questions about the decision and its aftermath are welcome throughout the call.

This suits anyone who has already heard about the Skull Tower and wants the other half of the story. It also works well as a quieter, outdoor session away from the busier fortress area.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Not included

  • Internet connection
  • Travel to the city

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Niš before heading out.

  2. Approach to Ćegar 15 min

The camera climbs the gentle hill outside the centre where the defending Serbian army made its final stand in 1809, and I set out how the battle reached this point.

  3. Monument at the Summit 15 min

You see the memorial built partly from stone salvaged from the Skull Tower's grim counterpart, and I explain why the commander chose to detonate the gunpowder store rather than surrender.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Niš: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Mučkalica and Niška Banja, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Belgrade time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
