Inside Florence's octagonal Baptistery
Highlights
- A dome covered entirely in mosaic
- An eight-sided plan older than the cathedral
- Possibly built on Roman foundations
- Gold mosaic explained scene by scene
- A quieter interior next to a busy square
About this tour
This session goes inside Florence's Baptistery to look at its mosaic-covered dome and unusual eight-sided plan. You see the ceiling mosaics up close, and the octagonal shape of the building itself as the camera turns slowly around the interior. The space stays the whole focus throughout.
We spend most of the time looking up at the dome, since the detail is easy to underexplain quickly. I describe the building's construction history as we turn through the space, and take questions once we finish.
It suits anyone with an interest in early medieval buildings and mosaic work. It pairs naturally with the Gates of Paradise session just outside.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
