Two churches, two centuries apart
Highlights
- Vytautas the Great's plain Gothic church
- Lithuania's largest Gothic church
- Two churches, two centuries apart
- Side chapels added over later years
- The old town's religious heart
About this tour
This session moves between two of Kaunas's oldest churches: the plain Gothic building Vytautas the Great commissioned and the far larger archcathedral basilica nearby. You see the difference in scale and decoration between the two, and I explain how both fit into the story of Lithuania's Christianisation. It stays close to the old town's religious heart.
I open with a sound check outside Vytautas's church, then walk the short distance to the archcathedral for the second half of the call. There is time for questions in both buildings, and I send a short note afterwards on the dates and dedications.
This suits anyone interested in Gothic architecture or Lithuania's early Christian history. It also pairs well with the castle session for a fuller morning in the old town.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Kaunas before heading out.
-
Vytautas the Great Church 21 min
You see the church Vytautas the Great had built in the early fifteenth century, and I explain why its plain Gothic brickwork looks so different from the grander churches nearby.
-
Kaunas Archcathedral Basilica 21 min
Inside the archcathedral, the camera settles under the vaulting of the largest Gothic church in Lithuania, and I point out the side chapels added over later centuries.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Kaunas: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Kibinai and Žaliakalnis, worth a slower look.

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
