About this tour

This session walks the padlock-covered railings of the Hohenzollern Bridge, explaining the tradition behind them and the sheer volume of rail traffic the bridge still carries. You see old, rusted locks beside newer bright ones and hear a train cross on the line above. It stays on the bridge throughout.

We move slowly along the railings, pausing at older locks worth a closer look, and I explain both the tradition and the bridge's engineering as we go. Questions come naturally as trains pass overhead. A short note on the bridge's history follows by message.

It suits anyone who enjoys a simple, visual landmark with a clear story behind it. It also pairs well with a Rhine promenade session for a view of the bridge from the water.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Cologne before heading out.

  2. Padlock railings 15 min

The camera moves along railings covered in thousands of padlocks, and I explain how the tradition of leaving a lock behind started and why it has continued for years.

  3. Passing train 15 min

As a train crosses on the rail line above, I explain how the bridge still carries some of the busiest rail traffic in the country alongside the pedestrian walkway.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Cologne: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Halver Hahn (rye roll with cheese) and Altstadt, worth a slower look.

  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
