Old town lanes below the fortress
Highlights
- The last of four Venetian gates
- Wooden balconies from the Ottoman era
- What the old walls once enclosed
- A quiet lane below the fortress
- Architecture explained, not just shown
About this tour
This session walks the quiet lanes just below the Fortezza, from the last surviving Venetian gate to a stretch of wooden Ottoman-era balconies. You see how much of the old wall has disappeared since the gate was built and get a proper look at architecture most visitors walk past too quickly. It stays entirely within the old town.
I move at an easy pace, stopping wherever a balcony or a doorway is worth a longer look, and take questions as we go. The comparison between what survives and what is gone comes up throughout.
This suits anyone who wants a quieter walk away from the main squares. It also pairs well with the Fortezza climb earlier in the day.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Rethymno before heading out.
-
Porta Guora 15 min
You see the last surviving gate of the old Venetian walls, once one of four, and I explain what stood on the sections that no longer exist.
-
Old Town wooden balconies 15 min
The camera moves slowly down a lane lined with wooden Ottoman-era balconies, and I point out which houses kept their original woodwork.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Rethymno: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Kalitsounia (cheese and herb pies) and Fortezza hill, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Athens time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
