Three layers of one hilltop
Highlights
- A fortress with sections over a thousand years old
- A theatre carved directly into the hillside
- One of the earliest centres of Slavic learning
- Three periods, traced down one hill
- History explained layer by layer
About this tour
This longer session moves through three different periods on the same hill above Ohrid's old town. You see the walls of a medieval fortress, a Hellenistic-era theatre built into the slope, and a reconstructed site connected to one of the earliest centres of Slavic learning. It follows the hill from its fortifications down to its oldest foundations.
I explain each period separately and try to keep the layers clear rather than blending them together, since visitors often confuse what belongs to which century. Questions about any of the three periods are welcome throughout.
This suits anyone who wants Ohrid's long history explained properly rather than compressed into one vague impression. It also suits anyone with a genuine interest in archaeology and how sites like this get dated.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Ohrid before heading out.
-
Samuel's Fortress 21 min
You see the walls of a medieval fortress with sections dating back over a thousand years, and I explain which parts belong to the earliest construction and which were added or repaired much later.
-
Ancient Theatre 21 min
The camera reaches a Hellenistic-era theatre built into the hillside, still used for performances today, and I point out how the seating was carved directly into the natural slope.
-
Plaošnik 21 min
You see the site connected to one of the earliest Slavic centres of learning, rebuilt on its original foundations, and I explain what has actually been confirmed by excavation here rather than assumed.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Ohrid: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Ohridska pastrmka (Ohrid trout) and Varoš, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Skopje time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
