Golden Gate and the northern walls
Highlights
- The palace's grandest entrance
- Empty niches that once held statues
- Roman wall beneath later additions
- A fortress built for an emperor
- A first look at the old town
About this tour
This session starts at the Golden Gate, the grandest of Diocletian's Palace's four entrances, then follows a stretch of the northern wall beside it. You see the empty niches that once held statues along the gate's front and then the wall line itself, part Roman and part later addition. It sets up how the palace was built as a fortress as much as a residence.
We start under the gate with a sound check, then walk the wall for the second stop, taking questions about the statues and the later building work. A short list follows once the session ends.
It suits anyone who wants the palace's defensive side explained before wandering its streets freely. It also works well as a solid first session for a first visit.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
