Roman Maastricht, from the Markt to the old city gate
Highlights
- A town hall built to stand alone
- Roman stonework under a hotel cellar
- An old road surface below street level
- The country's oldest surviving city gate
- Three centuries in one short walk
About this tour
This session traces the layers under the modern city, starting at the market square and its freestanding town hall, dropping into a preserved Roman cellar, and ending at the oldest city gate in the country. You see real Roman stonework a few steps below street level and then a thirteenth-century gate still standing at full height. Each stop shows a different century of the same small city.
We move at a steady walking pace between stops, and I leave time after each one for questions before moving on. Because two of the stops are close together, the walk itself takes only a few minutes and most of the time is spent looking closely rather than travelling.
It suits anyone who likes history shown in layers rather than a single period. Viewers who enjoy archaeology or old city planning tend to ask the most questions here.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

- A short list of places to visit later

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Maastricht before heading out.
-
Markt & Stadhuis 17 min
You see the market square and the seventeenth-century town hall designed by Pieter Post standing free in the middle of it, and I explain why it was built that way instead of against another building.
-
Derlon Museumkelder 17 min
The camera looks down into a hotel cellar where genuine Roman-era remains sit preserved under glass, and I point out the old road surface still visible below street level.
-
Helpoort 17 min
We finish at the oldest surviving city gate in the country, and I explain how it once controlled who could enter the city at all.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Maastricht: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Nonnevotten and Céramique, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Amsterdam time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
