Hamamönü, Ankara's restored old quarter, on camera
Highlights
- Restored Ottoman-era timber houses
- A quarter once left to disrepair
- A lane of small craft workshops
- Trades almost gone elsewhere in the city
- An older side of a modern capital
About this tour
This walk follows Hamamönü from its restored row of Ottoman houses to a lane of small craft workshops. You see the timber-framed buildings repainted after years of disrepair, then a stretch of shops keeping trades alive that have mostly disappeared elsewhere in Ankara. The session shows a side of the city easy to miss among its newer districts.
I begin with a sound check at the start of the quarter, then we move through the lanes while you ask questions about the restoration. I stop a little longer at the craft shops to explain what makes them unusual now. Afterwards I send a short note on what we saw.
This suits anyone who wants a gentler, older side of Ankara away from its government buildings and wide boulevards. It also suits a traveller looking for a shorter, relaxed session.

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Ankara before heading out.
-
Restored House Row 21 min
The camera follows a row of low Ottoman-era houses, their timber frames repainted in recent years. I explain how the quarter fell into disrepair before being restored.
-
Craft Shop Lane 21 min
You see a lane of small workshops making traditional crafts. I point out a couple of trades that have almost disappeared elsewhere in the city.
-
Your questions 9 min

-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Kavurma and Hamamönü, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
